September TBR

I’m very excited to get into some darker books for autumn. September isn’t quite autumnal until the end of the month but I’m ready for some Halloweeny vibes. I’ve picked out a few books with spooky or darker elements to read this month. They’re all paranormal and mostly romance. Some are from series with a slow burn romance throughout. God, I love a slow burn romance through an urban fantasy series.

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco

This is the conclusion to Maniscalco’s Kingdom of the Wicked trilogy. I was a bit so-so on the first book but absolutely loved the second book. So much so I pre-ordered this one as soon as the option was available.

This series follows a young witch’s entanglement with a group of demon siblings based on the seven deadly sins. It’s historical fantasy set in Italy and the underworld with an enemies-to-lovers slow burn romance.

The Dragon’s Bride by Katee Robert

I’m new to monster romance but this book has proved to be quite popular. Katee Robert is very popular with romance readers who like things a little bit darker with lots of steam. I wasn’t a big fan of Desperate Measures but I love the cover for this one. It’s like a high fantasy historical romance from the 80’s style cover.

Available on Kindle Unlimited.

A Game of Fate by Scarlett St. Clair

This is Clair’s book A Touch of Darkness told from the perspective of the MMC (male main character), Hades. It’s been ages since I read A Touch of Darkness but I loved it and I figure this book should be a good refresher before I read A Touch of Ruin.

This series is a fabulous retelling of Hades and Persephone. This Hades is much better than the original one!

Getting Wilde by Jenn Stark

This is an urban fantasy series based around tarot cards. I read the first book (a novella) a few months ago and loved it. You can’t beat fast-paced urban fantasy with a kick-ass female lead. It probably stems from growing up watching Buffy and Charmed but female-led urban fantasy is like my bread and butter.

Gild by Raven Kennedy

This is a retelling of the story of King Midas. I’m not very familiar with his story other than his touch turned things to gold.

I read the first few pages of this while I was waiting around in town one day and it peaked my interest. It seems like it will be a bit of a dark read with hopefully a lot of character growth for the FMC (female main character) cause there were a lot of things about her situation that I did not like.

How to Wake an Undead City by Hailey Edwards

This is the 6th and pretty much final book in Edwards amazing The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy series. There are a few epilogue novellas following this one. This has been one of my absolute favourite urban fantasy series. I binged the first five books last year but put off finishing it. There is the yummiest slow burn romance with a pining hero and a touch of enemies to lovers. Such a good combination plus the suspense stories in each book are awesome.
